How to Build a Website: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners
Quick answer
To build a website, decide what the site is for, register a domain name, choose a platform (a website builder, WordPress, or an AI assistant that builds it with you), plan a few core pages, write and add your content, connect your domain, then test on a phone and launch. With AI help, a simple site can go live in under a day.
Step 1: Decide what the website is for
Write one sentence about what visitors should do on your site: book a call, buy a product, read your writing, or see your work. That sentence decides everything else, from the platform you pick to the pages you need.
| Goal | Typical pages | Good platform fit |
|---|---|---|
| Local business | Home, Services, About, Contact | Website builder |
| Online store | Home, Shop, Product pages, Policies | Shopify or a builder with e-commerce |
| Blog or publication | Home, Articles, About | WordPress or a blogging platform |
| Portfolio | Home, Work, About, Contact | Squarespace, Framer or Webflow |
Step 2: Choose and register a domain name
Your domain name (like yourbusiness.com) is your address on the web. Pick something short, easy to spell and easy to say out loud. Read our guide on how to choose a domain name, then follow how to buy a domain name to register it.
If the name you want is already registered, you may still be able to buy a domain that is already taken.
Step 3: Pick a platform
You have four main options:
- Website builder (Squarespace, Wix, Shopify and others): hosting, templates, security and updates are all included. The easiest route for most people. See our comparison of website builders.
- WordPress with web hosting: the most flexible option, with thousands of themes and plugins. You (or a developer) handle updates, backups and security.
- Hire a designer or developer: best when you need custom design or features, or don’t have time to do it yourself.
- Build it with an AI assistant: describe what you want, and an AI assistant writes the code, sets up hosting and walks you through each step. See how to build a website with AI.
How we built this website
This site is an example of the fourth option. Its creator worked with Claude, an AI assistant: explained the topics and what the site should do, created a free Cloudflare account and a GitHub repository, and let the AI write and deploy the site. It was live in under 24 hours, for little more than the cost of the domain. You’re reading the result.
Step 4: Plan your pages
You can plan pages the traditional way, sketching each one yourself, or ask an AI assistant to propose a site structure and then refine it together: suggest changes, cut what you don’t need, and add what’s missing. Either way, most small sites need only a handful of pages:
- Home: what you do, who it’s for, and one clear next step.
- About: who is behind the site and why visitors should trust you.
- Services or products: what you offer, with prices if you can share them.
- Contact: a form, email address, phone number or booking link.
- Legal pages: a privacy policy if you collect any personal data (including through analytics or a contact form), and terms if you sell online.
Step 5: Write and add your content
Write for your visitor, not for yourself. Lead with the answer to the question they came with, use short paragraphs, and add clear headings. Use your own photos where you can, compress large images so pages load quickly, and give every image a short text description (alt text) so screen readers can describe it.
Using AI to write content
AI can help you publish far more content than you could write alone, but it shouldn’t publish unchecked. Here’s how we work on this site: AI writes the first draft of each article from our topic list; for the articles a person reviews, they record spoken notes on what to change and the AI applies those edits before the article goes live. That human review is what turns a generic draft into an answer worth reading. Check every fact, price and claim before you publish.
Step 6: Connect your domain
If you bought the domain from your builder, this is usually automatic. If you registered it elsewhere, your builder will give you DNS records to add at your registrar, often an A record for the root domain and a CNAME record for www. Changes typically take effect within minutes to a few hours.
You can do all of this by hand. But if you give an AI assistant access to your registrar or DNS provider, for example through a Cloudflare or GoDaddy API key or an MCP connection, it can add the records for you. Give it a key limited to the one domain, review each change, and enter passwords, payment details and API keys yourself rather than pasting them into a chat. Learn more in our guide to subdomains.
Step 7: Test, launch and get found
Before you announce the site:
- Open every page on a phone. Most visitors will see it there first.
- Click every link and send a test message through your contact form.
- Check that the site loads over https (the padlock in the address bar).
- Add the site to Google Search Console and submit your sitemap so Google can find your pages.
- Add it to Bing Webmaster Tools too. You can import your sites from Search Console in a couple of clicks.
- Add Google Analytics to see how many people visit and which pages they read.
- If you plan to run ads, set up Google Ads (formerly AdWords) and link it to Analytics.

After launch
A website is never really finished. Keep information like prices and opening hours current, renew your domain on time (turn on auto-renew), and add useful content that answers your customers’ questions. Wondering about the budget? See how much a website costs.
Frequently asked questions
Can I build a website for free?
Yes, most website builders have a free plan, but it puts the builder's name in your address (like yourname.builder.com) and shows their branding. To use your own domain name you normally need a paid plan, plus the domain itself.
Do I need to know how to code?
No. Website builders and WordPress let you build with drag-and-drop editors and ready-made templates. Code helps for custom features, but most small business, portfolio and blog sites need none.
How long does it take to build a website?
A simple site of three to five pages can be built in a day or two once your text and photos are ready, and in under a day with an AI assistant doing the technical work. Gathering and checking the content usually takes longer than the building.
Can AI build a website for me?
Yes. AI website builders generate a site from a description, and AI assistants like Claude can write the code, set up hosting and connect your domain while you approve each step. You still need to review the content and keep passwords and payment details in your own hands.
Should I buy the domain from my website builder?
You can, and it is convenient. Many people register the domain separately at a registrar so they can switch builders later without moving the domain. Either way, make sure the domain is registered in your name.
